Wren Class

W.B: 31.03.25

What a beautiful day to end our busy week! We thoroughly enjoyed putting on our performance for you to enjoy. We also loved hunting for Easter eggs today as well as finishing our prehistoric art unit and concluding our Science unit by completing an investigation 'Do the children with the longest femurs jump the furthest?'

We hope you have a lovely restful break.

Week beginning 24.03.25

This week seems to have flown by! We have dedicated a lot time to rehearsing our play and making sure we know the words to the songs, when to stand and sit along, with when to come on and off the stage! You are doing a great job Wren Class.

We welcomed a visitor from Denny Abbey into school on Monday who shared with us stories about pottery. Some of Wren Class also enjoyed doing Bikeability today. They showed great confidence maneuvering their bike around circuits on the playground.

In English, we did an independent write about our own animal park before looking at nonsense poems in the form of limericks and tongue twisters. In Maths, we are reading linear and circular scales which have clear intervals and in Science we have been looking at how muscles attach to bones to allow us to move. PSHE has involved discussing what is meant by good and bad secrets and our Art will involve creating a prehistoric style cave painting!

We hope you have a super weekend and look forward to welcoming you next week to see our production.

Thank you,

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week of 17th March 2025

Just some activities we have completed in Wren Class...

  • We designed and physically made our own 'animal park'! Then, we wrote about the animal park using lots of our super writing skills, including inverted commas and conjunctions.
  • We carried on learning about fractions and began to learn all about capacity.
  • We enjoyed the sunshine and practised our tennis skills.
  • We carried on practising for our play, now in the hall!
  • We continued with our 3 times table learning.
  • We have a few suspects now for who the thief is in our class novel, The Highland Falcon Thief!

Week of 10th March 2025

Thanks for a brilliant week Wren Class! We have had a special week with having Performing Arts Week!

This week, we...

  • Did really well learning about equivalent fractions in Maths.
  • Carried on practicing our songs for our 3 / 4 Production.
  • Writing our own story of 'King of the Sky' (story from another culture).
  • Rock Kidz visited us on Monday 10th March. They turned our school hall into our own concert venue and allowed us to experience the amazing world of live music. The KS2 workshop that followed was energetic and engaging. We ended with a celebration assembly to really share the message of 'You are Awesome So Be Awesome' (YASBA) to reinforce the positive mental health and self-esteem message of the whole day.

  • Our visit on Tuesday 11th March from Rock Steady shared rock/ pop band instruments in a whole school assembly before leading KS2 in a workshop to create our own band - with 2 vocalists, a lead guitar, a bass guitar, 2 keyboard players and a drummer.

  • Jack Stinton from JSDC  leading a whole school dance assembly  on Thursday 13th March with follow up workshops for each class on Thursday and Friday. We appreciated Jack's enthusiasm for dance which taught us that dance is for everyone.

  • Finally, on Friday 14th March, we were treated to a Classical Music Assembly, where a String Quartet to played for us and shared their incredible instruments, knowledge and skill within this genre of music.

A huge thank you to all our visitors for enriching our week with performing arts.

W.B 07.03.25

We have really enjoyed celebrating World Book Day today. For a Maths activity, we read the book 'Pozzettino' and designed our own creatures using multi-link cubes before drawing them and writing what fraction each colour represented in our animals. We also enjoyed sitting in the relaxation zone to read our class text. We also enjoyed our World Book Day activity learning about 'Unfairies' by Huw Aaron before designing our own 'Unfairies' for our own graphic novel!

What a wonderful day!

W.b 24.02.25

Hello all,

We hope you enjoyed the first week of Spring term 2. We have really enjoyed ourselves:

  • Learning about the food groups which constitute our diet in Science,
  • Starting our new text 'King of the Sky' in English and comparing life in Wales and in Italy and considering why the two characters have formed a friendship,
  • Mastering the the use of denominator and numerator in Maths to help us understand unit and non-unit fractions,
  • Using TTRS to speed our recall of multiplication facts,
  • Discussing our trust team in PSHE and which adults we would identify in our own,
  • Drawing animals in the style of prehistoric artwork in Art,
  • Looking at types of farming in Geography,

and learning about our LKS2 Production and starting to learn the songs!

What a good week, well done everyone.

Don't forget next Friday will be World Book Day for us and we look forward to celebrating books then and throughout the week!

Week Beginning 10.02.25

What a lovely end to the half term; enjoying feel good Friday! In Wrens we worked on our DT models; the castles we had excitedly been ready to create! We spent the morning constructing and working really hard on them.

We have completed our fables in English, ended our unit on Rocks in Science by conducting an experiment to see how permeable different soils were, explored problems involving perimeter and played games in Maths in Maths, compared two settlements in Geography and learnt about the Hindu God Shiva in R and W.

We have been reading the Highland Falcon with enthusiasm; wondering who stole the jewellery on the train!

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting with you all on parent's evening - thank you for joining us.

Have a lovely half term,

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week beg. 3rd Feb 2025

Well done Wrens for another busy and productive week. This week -

  • In Science, we have been learning all about the different types of soil and that it is made out of water, minerals, air and organic matter. We also learnt that 'Pedalogists' study soil and that there are 4 distinct types of soil (silt soil, chalky soil, sandy soil and clay-based soil).
  • In P.E. we continued with our gymnastic sequences for our indoor lesson.
  • In Maths, we continued with our measuring skills and we also loved our special NSPCC, dress up number day on Friday where we undertook lots of enjoyable number activities (photos to follow!).
  • In Reading, we enjoyed Storytelling week where we had good discussions about some of our favourite stories. Furthermore, it was a pleasure to have some Year 6 children pop into Wren Class to share some of their own written 'Fable' Stories, which we have studying in our English lesson! Thanks Year 6, you were very inspiring!
  • In Religion and World Views, we continued learning about Hinduism especially learning about where the famous 'Ganesh' story originates from.
  • In Geography, we learnt how London is made up of different Boroughs and how it has to 'adapt' over the years because of the millions of people living there, e.g. more cycle and bus lanes and increased building of flats for people to live in!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week beg. 27.01.24

Another busy week in Wren Class for the final week of January!

  • In Maths, we have been continuing with our measuring skills. We looked at the differences between millimetres, centimetres and metres and then converted different measurements. Using metre sticks and small cm rulers has been great fun to practically measure objects around our classroom.
  • Furthermore, we have been practising our Times Tables Skills on TTRS (Times tables rockstars) which we are gaining confidence with.
  • In P.E. our gymnastics skills are building with balances, shapes and various jumps with us now beginning to sequence them altogether.
  • In Science, we have continued to enjoy our Rocks topic, with us all being enthusiastic and sharing our knowledge together.
  • In English, we have started learning some 'Fables', looking at the morals of simple stories. Identifying the various features of 'Fables' has enabled us to create our class toolkit so we can start writing our own 'Fables' in the next few weeks.
  • In Reading, we are beginning to suspect some of our characters on the 'Highland Falcon Train' of who the thief could be...!
  • In Reading, we also joined an online, live interview with the author of our class novel, M G Leonard, which was inspiring because she loves adventures and she has written many, many books!

See you in February! Mrs Rayment & Mrs O'Briain

Week Beginning 20.01.25

We have really enjoyed our learning this week especially see the fruits of our labour in English! We wrote our version of a diary entry for Tuffy using all the English skills that we have our learnt in our lessons. In Maths we did some problem solving and now are looking at measuring length with cm, m and mm. Millimetres required care when reading our rulers! It has been great testing the properties of rocks in Science by seeing how hard they are and whether or not they float.

We have also been doing a lot of discussion about growth mindset and wrote positive affirmations to display in the classroom. In PSHE, we have been looking at different types of family and DT involved constructing castles from a net after we mastered 3D shapes first. In Geography we looked at the differences between villages and towns.

The children were very excited to participate in film night this evening! Have a great weekend.

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week 13.01.25

It was lovely to have some warmer weather after last week's cold snap!

We have really enjoyed having copies of our class text 'The Highland Falcon Thief' to read and are devouring the story whilst familiarising ourselves with the many characters. We have also continued with our work on Recounts in English and have been writing sentences with adverbials and emotions to describe what has been happening with Tuffy the cat!

Maths has involved used our knowledge of our times tables facts to multiply and divide large numbers, looking for related facts.

It was lovely to have so many rocks to share in our Science and we enjoyed learning how the different types form.

Stereotypes was the focus of our PSHE and we explored 3D shapes in our DT, identifying shapes used in real castles before constructing our own with 3D shapes and working our how to form a 3D shape from a net.

In RE we explored traditions in the Hindu culture and in History looked at how the cities grew in the Indus Valley.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week Beginning 05.01.24

Happy New Year to you! We hope you enjoyed your Christmas break.

It has been straight back into the hard work in Wren Class. We have started our new class text 'The Highland Falcon' and in English are beginning a unit on 'Recounts' and are using 'The Diary of a Killer Cat' as our stimulus.

In Maths we are continuing to work on Multiplication and Division, using related facts to help us. We did start the term with a problem-solving task and looked at how many possibilities we could find relating to our winter clothing. The examples show the different ways the children represented their working.

In Science, our unit on Rocks began by exploring rocks and their properties - we touched and looked at different examples, curious about what we would see and where they may have come from.

In PSHE, our work about 'Diversity' began with us looking at what helps to form our identity.

DT, saw us learning about types of castle and how they are constructed to suit their purpose.

In PE, we are doing gymnastics and enjoyed our first chance to use the mats in KS2!

Have a good week, keep warm!

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week Beginning 08.12.24

The penultimate week of term has been a busy one!

We were very excited to make games with magnets in our Science choosing a fishing rod game or a race track to show how metals attract certain materials.

In English we have started planning our explanation text about our 'robo animal!' The children have chose robo-turtles, flamingos and even dinosaurs as their creation and will be doing an independent write next week about how their animal works.

Multiplication facts have been the focus in Maths, we have been learning the 2, 4 and 8 times tables because we spotted that when we double each number, it helps us to find related times tables facts. The children are also very good at identifying fact families for each multiple we looked at.

In Art, we have been creating a final piece of work in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe.

Our Geography work saw us discussing what we need to pack in a bag for a journey in the mountains.

We also enjoyed working with Mrs Spencer on our Art project, participating in the Santa dash and watching the KS1 Christmas play! Phew! What a busy week.

Enjoy your weekend Wren Class.

Week beg.02.12.24

Into December we go...! We started our book (& a little chocolate!) advent calendar in Wren Class, which was very exciting.

A busy week, including -

Week Beginning 25.11.24

It's hard to believe that this is our last week in November! It was great fun beginning to find the Christmas spirit as Wren Class enjoyed making Christmas decorations with many of you and loved seeing them on display around school. It also exciting having the Book Fair in school - don't forget to have a look at the lovely books on display.

This week Wren Class:

  • Started working on Multiplication and Division in Maths and looked at arrays and equal groupings. We also played 'Shut the Box' with dice - perhaps the children could teach you how to play?
  • Continued exploring an explanation text in English and started writing their own about a robot dog.
  • Carried out an experiment in Science to see which type of magnet was the strongest.
  • Used observational drawing in Art to sketch flowers and leaves.
  • Discussed why people live on mountains in Geography.
  • Explored why rules are important and how they can be helpful in PSHE.
  • Continued work on the spelling rule using 'ally' and completed their dictation using their spelling words for homework in our Spelling.

Another busy week!

Well done Wren Class - keep up the hard work.

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week beg. 18th November

Busy, chilly but productive week in Wrens!

  • In P.E. we did our 3rd dance lessons where we sequenced all of our movements from the last few dance lessons, carefully listening to the beat of 8.

  • In English, we completed our dragon descriptions and we edited them using our pink pens - which we are getting more confident with.
  • In Reading, we continued to enjoy our funny class novel - 'An alien in the jam factory' where we created questions as to what to ask the alien if we ever met her! We also read a non-fiction text this week all about Isaac Newton, linking it in with our Science the last few weeks on forces.

Thanks for a great week Wrens, have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week beginning 11.11.24

Wow! What a week!

We showed our respect on Monday through a 2 minute silence to mark Rememberance after considering what this mean to us.

This week was 'Kindness Week' associated too with a national Anti-bullying week. We spent a lot of time being kind to ourselves through mindful moments in our day including mindful colouring and discussions about what it means to show empathy to our peers. Alongside this, we discussed all of the types of bullying, identifying that bullying is persistant behaviour, which we hope not to see in our school.

  • Maths - we continue to work on column addition and subtraction. However, we problem solved on Friday for Children in Need, finding different ways of totalling a given amount of coins.
  • English, we looked at Michael Rosen Poems for Michael Rosen day. We have also been planning for a descriptive piece of writing about a dragon to show off what we have learnt in our writing this term. We also completed our first dictation to test the spellings we sent home for homework.
  • We went outside to explore 'Friction' with some toy cars before looking at what happens when we put cars on ramps with different surfaces in our Science.
  • In Geography, we began learning about mountains.
  • In Art, we are using our shading skills to help us draw what we can see; we loved the examples we saw in homework books too!

Have a restful weekend,

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Autumn Timetable

We hope you all had a wonderful half-term. Wren Class have settled back in positively with lots of lovely activities completed!

This week -

  • In English, we looked at different types of poems & we wrote a Calligram (shape poem), Kennings (2 word phrases poem) and a Cinquain (syllable, diamond poem) all about Bonfire Night and fireworks. Well done Wren class, you worked super hard on these and they look brilliant!
  • In Maths, we are continuing with our adding and subtracting skills, especially looking at using a column when crossing the tens.
  • In Geography (Rivers), History (Egyptians) and R & W (Rama and Sita), we re-capped our vocabulary and learning from last term to see what we have remembered! We also completed our Diwali lamps this week.
  • In Science, we have started learning about forces after our wonderful learning about light last term.
  • In P.E this term, we are learning dance skills, starting with movements to machinery - linking in with our Wild Robot book that we have enjoyed finishing this week.
  • In Reading, it's been really lovely to share which books you have been enjoying reading the last few weeks.

Well done Wren Class, we are proud of your efforts this week, settling back in so well.

Week Beginning 21.10.24

It was such a delight to talk to parents and carers at Parent's Evening this week. Thank you for joining us! We are so proud of how Wrens have settled into Year 3.

Learning this week has involved:

  • adding and subtracting using a formal method in maths
  • publishing our best version of 'Tuesday in our English
  • making our own books about 'Light' in Science to show what we have learnt
  • programming crumbles to light a pumpkin in Science
  • learning how 'Diwali' is celebrated in RE
  • exploring hieroglyphs in History
  • discussing 'Wants, Rights and Needs' in PSHE.

The children have also been working hard on running for fun in our 'Run for Fun' week. We completed 342 laps as a class this afternoon! Well done Wren Class.

Have restful break.

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week Beginning 14.10.24

We have been really proud of how the children have worked this week. We have been planning a story based on our book 'Tuesday'. You can see some lovely examples of the writing the children did at the start of the week which will support the telling of the story.

We continue to work on addition and subtraction in maths and a problem solving activity called 'Totality' was enjoyed by all! We are still finding it tricky when we have to cross tens or hundreds but with more practice we will definitely master it soon!

Computing was thoroughly enjoyable this week with the children working with 'Crumbles' to do some modelling.

We are also really proud of our posters sharing how to stay safe in the sun!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Week beginning 07.10.24

What an exciting start to the week! We were joined by a paralympic athlete and it was so very exciting! The children really enjoyed the activities he did with him and he was an inspiration to us all!

Wren Class learning

We continue to work on adding in maths and worked hard showing how to add 100s, 10s and 1s without bridging and used a place value table to help us to see how the digits change.

In Religion and World views, the children have been learning about Rama and Sita.

In PSHE, our unit on 'Working Together' has been thought provoking and today we designed our dream playgrounds before accepting feedback from others in a constructive conversation.

In Science we are nearing the end of our unit on 'Light' and looked at mirror images and how they are created. We were amazed when we realised that we wave at our reflection with our right hand but the mirror image waves back with it's left! So, we practised being mirror images of each other before using our mirror to read a reflected message!

Another busy week - well done all!

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

Hello All,

Wren Class have enjoyed another busy week. What a mixture of weather too! The heavy rain on Monday meant we did some yoga in the classroom instead of being able to go outside. In Maths, we have been finishing work on place value and were looking for connections between counting in 5's and 50's. We continue to enjoy our text 'Tuesday' and worked on constructing speech for the illustrations. When the sun appeared on Thursday, we managed to get outside and make some shadows before completing an experiment looking at how we can change the size of a shadow with a torch. This afternoon, the children were pleased to finally begin making their Egyptian inspired collars for DT!

Well done for your hard work this week!

Enjoy the weekend.

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain

W.b 30.09.24

Autumn Term Topic Overview

Week Beginning 23.09.24

It was really lovely to attend the Harvest Assembly and see so many parents, carers and friends in attendance. The children loved learning a poem to share with you and use their mosaic skills to make their pumpkin wreath.

Wren Class have really enjoyed their new text in English. 'Tuesday' is a wordless picture book which stimulated their curiosity and allowed them to construct question sentences about what they were seeing. In maths, Wrens continued to work on place value and find starting their lessons with a game is a great way of encouraging them to apply the maths skills that they have been learning. Science continues to excite the children as they explore light using the terms 'transparent, translucent and opaque' correctly.

We are also getting into the routine of changing our reading books, which are at our reading level, on a Monday and Friday, On a Wednesday, we change library books when we choose a book to read for pleasure. Thank you too for continuing to support the children with their homework - we are thrilled to hear how enthusiastic the children are to complete it! Keep it up!

Thank you!

Mrs O'Briain and Mrs Rayment

Week Beginning 16.09.24

Hello all,

First of all, we have to say a HUGE well done to EVERYONE for completing their first piece of homework! We were SO impressed - keep it up.

It has been another successful week in Wren Class. We are particularly proud of the progress we are making with our applique skills in DT. From our basic running stitch, we can now attach pieces together and this is preparing us for our final product - an Egyptian collar. We are still using practical equipment to help us secure our understanding of place value and are using these skills to solve problems whether playing a game against our partner or finding our  way through a number maze. In PE, we have been working on our fitness skills using skipping ropes. You can see in our PSHE, we are working on becoming a successful group by thinking about what we need to do to solve a problem and work together to do it! This also made us consider that a class reward would be good to have to help celebrate when we are successful as a group. We decided on collecting marbles in a jar for when we work well as Wrens.

Reading books have come home today, do return them on a Monday and Friday and don't forget library books are due on a Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain.

Week Beginning: 09.09.24

We have really enjoyed getting to know Wren Class and already have been so busy with our learning and familiarising ourselves with rules, routines and expectations for Year 3.

In our English, we have been exploring 'Here we are' and have added lots to our working wall. In Maths, we looked at place value particularly representing and partitioning numbers to 1000. Science began with a lesson exploring light using torches and seeing how it travels in straight lines. We are most proud of the progress we have made with our running stitch, beginning with using boards to practice before progressing to using felt!

Already, completed homework tasks are being handed in too! Well done Year 3!

Reading logs and banded books will come home next week.

Thank you for your support, have a good week!

Mrs Rayment and Mrs O'Briain
