Miss Johnson – Year 4
Spring Term 2020
Attached below are the homework tasks for Spring 2. The tasks should be completed straight into your child's Learning Log or stuck in afterwards. Alongside doing homework, your child should be reading daily and practising their times tables. Reading should be recorded in their blue Reading Records, where they can also find their username and password for Times Tables Rock Stars.
Week beginning 9th March 2020
We continued our work this week in Geography using atlases to locate rivers and seas.
Money has been our focus in Maths and we have been answering related word problems. We used physical representations of money to help us. If there are any opportunities for your child to calculate the total cost of a few items, pay for them and receive change this will greatly benefit their understanding of money.
DT has been a challenge for some of Badger Class but they have really demonstrated their resilience with our sewing project. We practised the running stitch and blanket stitch, as well as trying hard to thread our own needles this week and last!
Week beginning 2nd March 2020
During PSHE, we have discussed the risks in every day situations and developed strategies on how to keep ourselves safer.
In Science this half term, we are learning all about plants. We started our topic by looking at the structure and function of different plant parts. The children are growing broad beans and they are going to record their findings in the weeks commencing, thinking about what plants need for life and growth.
Week beginning 24th February 2020
We worked hard in English this week learning the features of instructional writing; this was so we could create our own instructions on how to make a pancake!
We enjoyed having the Raptor Foundation in seeing the birds of prey.
Week beginning 10th February 2020
In Maths, we have been practising multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. We used Gattegno charts and played an instruction game!
In Art this week, we used modroc for the outer layer of our wire figures. We painted the bottoms so that the white statues would stand out! We are all very happy with our Henry Moore inspired final pieces.
Week beginning 3rd February 2020
In Art, we manipulated wire to create statues and bent them in the style of by Henry Moore figurines.
We have had the chance to look at sacred items from the religion Islam. We learnt about what it means to be a Muslim and some of their practices during our RE lessons.
Week beginning 27th January 2020
During PE, we learnt how to complete an 'Indian Dribble'. It was very tricky but it gives us a strategy to get around a defender.
During our weekly Art sessions, Badger Class have worked very hard to draw in the style of Henry Moore. We have been using a variety of different mediums and have experimented with mixed media interpretations of his drawings.
In Maths, we explored finding a fraction of a quantity using place value counters.
Week beginning 20th January 2020
Magnets! We have been exploring how magnets behave in Science using the vocabulary attract, repel, North and South.
During our Gymnastics session with Premier Sports, we explored shapes and how our bodies can move.
In RE, we explored different sacred items which represented commitment and belonging within Judaism.
Week beginning 13th January 2020
Badger Class had a blast at The Tower of London. It was a fantastic experience for all of us and we learnt so much about Crime and Punishment!
We have started our Unihoc skill development in PE where children have learnt how to complete a 'push pass'.
Week beginning 6th January 2020
Badger Class revised telling the time on analogue and digital clocks. We practised converting between the 12 and 24 hour clock format.
In Science, we explored forces in motions through observations. We discussed the terms push, pull and resistance using Plasticine and a balloon car.
Autumn Term 2019
Week beginning 16th December 2019
We made Christmas hats and rehearsed our poem for the Church Service on Thursday.
Week beginning 9th December 2019
Forest Schooling - Badgers made chips on the fire, had hot chocolate and made Christmas stars out of sticks!
This week in computing, we have been programming using Crumble. We input a simple algorithm to turn the lights on/off, with a variety of timings and colours.
In our French lesson this week, the children learnt how to use French dictionaries. They were reading and orally rehearsing their numbers and colours.
Week beginning 2nd December 2019
We are completing cross curricular writing over the next two weeks - using everything we have learnt in Science to write a of non-fiction text. The children started by doing some research and revision using tablets or books.
In computing, the children used Lego which they could physically manipulate to create a maze and have inputted their designs onto a programme called 'Lego Digital Designer'. They then programmed a person to walk the maze!
Week beginning 25th November 2019
Badger Class worked together to analyse a picture and story starter. They are going to answer some of these questions and use previous events to continue writing this week. Their imaginations
During Maths this week, we have been working hard to understand the relationship between multiplication and division. When focusing solely on division, we investigated whether sharing and grouping always gives the same answer. The children concluded it does!
Week beginning 18th November 2019
In Science, the children have been learning about the function of endoskeletons and exoskeletons. They learnt that skeletons are for support, protection and movement.
The children have written super sentences this week using their Mrs. Wordsmith vocabulary.
In Maths, we have been multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100 using our place value grids.
Week beginning 11th November 2019
During Kindness week, we planned a Sports Party for our happy, healthy Hedgehog friends. We worked in groups to plan, organise and deliver a sporty activity for Hedgehog Class. They really enjoyed their morning. Well done to all Badgers for being encouraging and positive.
In Science, we have been learning about vertebrates and their skeletons.
Week beginning 4th November 2019
We learnt about the Greek Myth Medusa and are now creating our own Medusa inspired masks. We are using mixed media to create our masks, starting with newspaper!
In Science, we are learning that animals get their nutrition from what they eat. We can classify them as carnivores, herbivores or omnivores and researched animals we weren't sure about.
Week beginning 28th October 2019
This week Badger Class had an introduction lesson to bar models using cuisenaire rods. They worked in groups to solve different problems.
During PE lessons, we are starting to develop our football skills focusing on control and movement. As it gets colder, children will need to wrap up warm!
We have started a new story in English called The Caravan. Children recorded fantastic sentences about the story using their knowledge of word class.
Week beginning 14th October 2019
After working hard all half term, Badgers deserved a fun session in the Explorers Area. We cooked mini pizza wraps on the fire and role played The Battle of Marathon which happened in Ancient Greece.
In Art, we drew our patterns and designs onto our pots in pencil before painting over the markings with black acrylic paint. It was very hard to keep the paint neat because our pots were bumpy and uneven. We managed it in the end and we are very happy with the results!

This week we were lucky to participate in a Korfball session run by Ely Viking Club. Children had a go at scoring and passing the ball which was made into a competitive game!

Science - Badger Class worked in groups to plan a practical investigation into soundproofing which we will carry out next week. We want to find out which materials would best ‘muffle’ a sound.
Geography - We used atlases to find the location of countries which had Ancient Civilisations.
Week beginning 16th September 2019
PE - In Tennis, we practised keeping control of a ball. We had to catch a ball with cones first and then moved on to catching a ball between two rackets. Badgers enjoyed balancing the ball on their rackets too!
Maths - We have been using our knowledge of place value to add and subtract 10, 100 and 1000 from up to 5 digit numbers!
Science - This week we learnt that sound can travel through solids, liquids and gases. We tested this by making observations when using a cup telephone, observing the distance that sound could travel and using data loggers.

PE- We started our PE lessons by testing our basic skills and fitness; including balancing, catching and running.
Week beginning 4th September 2019
English - Badger class had ‘arguments’ with each other about whether or not Pandora’s Box should have been opened. We have enjoyed learning about our first Ancient Greek Myth.
Team Games - We have had a great first week back at school and enjoyed being competitive.
Art - We enjoyed using our imaginations to create our own mythical creatures. We sketched and used pen to add detail.
