Forest School
At Stretham Community Primary School, we are proud to offer an exciting and enriching Forest School programme that allows children to learn, explore and thrive in the natural environment.
Located within our school grounds, our dedicated Forest School area includes a beautiful wooded space, a pond, a fire circle and a mud kitchen. These unique outdoor learning environments provide endless opportunities for discovery, creativity and hands-on learning throughout the year.
We currently offer regular Forest School sessions across Key Stage 1, led by our two fully qualified Level 3 Forest School Leaders. Their expertise ensures that every session provides safe, engaging and meaningful experiences that support children's development and wellbeing.
What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-centred approach to learning that takes place outdoors in a natural environment. Through exploration, play, practical activities and supported risk-taking, children develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong connection with nature.
Sessions are designed to encourage curiosity and independence while allowing children to learn at their own pace. Activities may include den building, pond dipping, nature crafts, storytelling, fire circle experiences, wildlife observation, imaginative play and environmental exploration.
Benefits of Forest School
Forest School offers a wide range of benefits for children's learning and development:
Confidence and Self-Esteem
Children are encouraged to try new experiences, solve problems independently and take appropriate risks, helping them to develop confidence and a positive sense of self.
Communication and Teamwork
Working together on projects and challenges helps children develop speaking, listening and collaboration skills.
Resilience and Perseverance
Outdoor learning often presents new challenges. Children learn to adapt, persevere and develop a growth mindset when faced with difficulties.
Physical Development
Climbing, balancing, digging, carrying and exploring help to improve coordination, strength, balance and gross motor skills.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
Time spent in nature has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and support emotional wellbeing. Forest School provides a calm and nurturing environment where children can feel relaxed and connected to the world around them.
Creativity and Imagination
Natural resources and open-ended activities inspire imaginative play, creativity and problem-solving.
Environmental Awareness
Children develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world, learning how to care for and respect the environment.
Engagement in Learning
Outdoor experiences help children make meaningful connections with their classroom learning and can increase motivation, curiosity and enthusiasm.
Our Forest School programme is a valued part of school life, providing memorable experiences that support children's academic, social, emotional and physical development. We believe that learning in nature helps children grow into confident, capable and resilient learners who are ready to embrace new challenges.
